Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
