European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
