Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to question specific rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
