Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
